Consumer Reports
Founded in 1936 by Arthur Kallet, Colston Warne, and other members of the Consumers
Union, as a way for the consumer advocacy group Consumer Reports is an American
magazine published monthly with approximately 4 million subscribers. Today, Consumer Reports is known for its reviews and comparisons of countless consumer
products and services, which it obtains its results from its in-house testing laboratory.
Negative or unfavorable results have lead to several lawsuits being filed against
Consumer Reports. The Bose Corporation sued Consumer Reports for publishing a report
stating that Bose speakers performed relatively poorly in 1984 and won a monetary
award of $210,000 in libel damages, however the Federal Supreme Court overturned
the ruling. The magazine was again sued in 1996 by Suzuki Motors regarding Consumer
Reports? road test of the Suzuki Samurai and published results in 1988. The lawsuit
was dismissed by mutual consent in 2004. Then in 2003, Sharper Image sued Consumer
Reports in California for its reviews of Sharper Image's Ionic Breeze Quadra air
purifier. The case was dismissed. In order to provide non-biases results, Consumer Reports does not accept advertising
nor does it allow commercial use of its reviews for the purpose of selling products/services.
In addition, Consumer Reports staff purchase all test products at retail and do
not accept any free samples from manufacturers. Consumers Union also publishes ConsumerReports.org. Consumer Reports should not
be confused with Consumers Digest, which is a for-profit publication that does accept
advertisements and permits companies to use its reviews for marketing purposes.
Consumer Reports is not affiliated with ConsumerSearch. ConsumerSearch reviews
and analyzes results from other reviews and sources.
