About The Good Housekeeping Institute
The Good Housekeeping Institute was founded in 1900 as a consumer product evaluation
laboratory for the Good Housekeeping magazine. It's purpose if for the improvement
of life for the consumer through education and product evaluation. Because of its
advocacy for pure food in 1905, the Good Housekeeping Institute helped to lead the
way for the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act. Then in 1952, when cigarette advertisements
were seen in all publications, Good Housekeeping prohibited their advertisements
in the magazine. The Good Housekeeping Institute continues to improve the lives
of consumers and their families today. In 1912, Harvey W. Wiley took over the Good Housekeeping Institute laboratories
and established the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. Today the Institute has
several departments specialized in engineering, chemistry, food, food appliances,
nutrition, beauty products, home care, and textiles. All advertisements that are
submitted to the magazine are reviewed and only those products and services that
are found acceptable are published. These products then become eligible to earn
the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. Any product or service that fails within
2 years of use of earning the Seal of Approval, Good Housekeeping will either replace
the product or refund the full purchase price. In addition, the Institute uses
its knowledge and expertise to prepare the Buyer's Guides and Institute Reports,
which appear throughout every issue of the magazine.
